Western Branch Debate – 23rd January 2018

The purpose of the debate is to open up, engage and facilitate discussion between Western Branch members on two key areas of interest. The questions that will be put forward are:

1. This house believes that within 15 years the disciplines of Safety and Reliability Engineering will be replaced by Software Assurance Techniques.

With increasing automation and digitisation of the control of engineering systems what role is to be played by safety and reliability engineering in the future? Will these disciplines of safety and reliability engineering in the future form a smaller sub-set of Software Assurance techniques? Will the disciplines of Safety and Reliability remain a core component of Engineering Programmes of the future?

2. How can we make Safety and Reliability Engineers more representative of society?

It is challenged that the Safety and Reliability Engineering industry is not representative. For example only 8% of engineers in the UK are women. Whilst this is an issue facing all engineering disciplines, how can the Safety and Reliability Society engage with a wider talent pool and demonstrate the benefits of a career Safety and Reliability Engineering?
Debate Format
20 minutes will be allocated to each question put forward. The debate will be chaired by Gareth Furmston. The purpose of the debate is to share members ideas, thoughts and experience on the issues put forward. In keeping with that principle please ensure that discussions remain friendly and courteous!
As with all SaRS branches, the branch covers a wide range of industries and organisations which include aircraft design and  manufacture, railways, power industries, the Ministry of Defence and the Met Office

These events are open to non members and visitors are most welcome.

The branch events calendar year runs from September to May each year.
