The Annual Conference - SARSS08

SaRS08:

Solutions to the Reliability and Safety Engineering Shortfall

Date and venue: The Ministry of Defence (Defence Equipment and Support) headquarters in Bristol has offered to host the event on the afternoon of Thursday 2nd October 2008 following its Equipment Safety Assurance Seminar 08 (ESAS08) of 30th Sept to 2nd October.

Context : The UK is undergoing a rapid expansion in demand for systems safety and reliability professionals. The community is currently small and often fragmented within its different industrial sectors. There are no universally agreed standards of competence or minimum educational levels, nor are there accepted mechanisms on sustaining Continuous Professional Development.

The order book: The nuclear sector is undergoing decommissioning and is likely to be building new power stations; the offshore sector continues to expand; the railways need modernisation; the aviation and air-traffic control sector is commissioning complex software; the defence sector must demonstrate the same levels of safety as civil practice and is commissioning a new generation of nuclear submarines, surface ships, weapons, aircraft and land vehicles.

Speakers are invited from:
• Large UK-based firms with a safety and reliability engineering community
to define the requirement for a common standard of systems safety and
reliability training. Current company CPD schemes and best practice can
be presented.
• Fellow engineering institutions to speak and present their competence
schemas, with a view to identifying best-practice and understanding
synergies.
• Academics and Training course providers to present their solutions to the
skills shortfall and the rationale behind their current courses, focussing
initially on Masters-level.

Outcome : SaRS seeks to form a consensus on best-of-breed standards for competence, minimum educational standards and CPD requirements. Key speakers and delegates will be invited to join SaRS’ new Education and Training Committee to further develop the requirement and collaborate in the new SARS’ professional register of systems Safety and Systems Availability Engineers for the UK.

Cost : The workshop will entirely funded by SaRS and free to delegates, in pursuance of Safety and Reliability Society’s charitable aims. Any training providers wishing to advertise courses with a stand will be charged a nominal fee by the ESAS Conference

Delegates are invited to attend the ESAS Conference if they wish
