The Roots of Rail Systems Engineering |
Eddie Goddard |
INCOSE UK Chapter |
Eddie has had a 46-year long career in London Underground, from apprentice to Chief Engineer. He will describe his experience of designing and commissioning signalling systems from traditional fail-safe systems to communications-based systems of today. A lifelong advocate of Systems Engineering, he will describe his experiences of introducing SE principles from the 1960's to today. Using excerpts from the presentations he used to try to give an insight into what SE can do, he will explore the reasons that some people are so reluctant to take them on board. He will also cover his work on national and international committees during the formulation of safety standards and contrast the safety regime of today with that when the Victoria Line was first commissioned. |

The interface between law and engineering |
Sir Vivian Ramsey, Dr Peter Fenn, Professor John Uff, Dr Chris Elliott |
RAE |
Like all elements of society, engineering operates within the framework of the law. As part of their work, engineers routinely interact with the legal profession, in a whole spectrum of resulting issues including contract disputes, product liability, environmental legislation, health and safety and, potentially, corporate manslaughter. This meeting will examine these issues, explore attitudes of both the legal and engineering profession and consider what engineers need to know about the law and the consequences of failure. The meeting will be an open forum discussion, the output of which will be used by the Academy to inform its future work at the interface of law and engineering and to further develop current workstreams. |

The Language of Safety |
SaRS |
Safety and safety related risks can be evaluated in a number of ways, some of these techniques are simple others require specialist knowledge and input. The outputs from these assessments and analysis need to be acted upon to maintain or improve safety levels. As a safety and risk assessment community we can interact well with our peers, however we sometimes fail to communicate with those who we need to gather data from and with those key stakeholders who implement the results of our work. This event will consider not the language which we use but how we improve our communications in carrying out and implementing our work leading to an increase in effectiveness and overall safety. |
