The President’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to SaRS
First reported in April’s Society No. 201 was the introduction of the “President’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to SaRS”. On 22nd May (at SaRS Western Branch’s AGM) the SaRS President (Richard Denning) presented Nigel de Bray with the society’s first award for “outstanding contribution”. The citation for the award read:
Nigel has been an active member of the Western Branch committee since 1985, holding the post of secretary for 15 years (1985 – 2001). His proactive involvement with the committee has helped to maintain the branch and ensured it has continued to flourish – with an active programme of events (typically 8 varied lectures per year with an average attendance of 25+). Additionally he was the joint editor of the proceedings of the SaRS Spring 1991 conference – Air Transport Safety.
Nigel thanked the President for the unexpected award, and said “The success of a branch depends on its committee working together and listening to the membership. The Western Branch has been lucky that its committee has always got on well together. The time has come for more young blood.”
Richard (as President) said “It’s a pleasure to give this first award to a member of my own local branch of the society; it is people like Nigel who made me want to join the society in the first place as the standard of the lecture programme was so great that I found myself attending most meetings and felt that I should belong to a society I found so interesting.”
