London Branch – Service-Based Safety Assurance: Considering the Principles of Safety Assurance for the Services we deliver
The risks presented by safety-related services are rarely explicitly considered in current safety management practices, guidelines and standards. Service (distinct from system) failures have likely led to safety incidents and accidents, but this has rarely been recognised.
It is acknowledged that a service-oriented approach may help in identifying and managing safety risks more effectively in many service-based scenarios, particularly where there are service contracts or service level agreements (SLAs) in place. This service view of safety better informs the content of those agreements. There are therefore clear business and societal benefits, in terms of reduced harm, reduced commercial liabilities and improved efficiencies, in taking a service view of safety.
We, as Safety Engineering professionals must not be blinkered to the techniques we utilise applying only to physical, tangible products. A service-based approach to assuring safety provides a different, useful and important perspective to that of more traditional systems-focussed approaches. We need to think outside the box in assuring all aspects of the solutions we support and importantly where these are likely to be in use for many years in scope of a service provision.
This webinar will discuss the work by the Safety Critical Systems Club (SCSC) Service Assurance Working Group that has led to their published Guidance, plus some clear examples of Service failures where application of the Service Assurance Principles may have led to a far better outcome.
The webinar will be relevant to anyone involved in delivery of a safety-critical service: Safety Engineers, Safety Managers, Service Delivery Engineers, Service Managers, Service Architects, and Engineering Managers with an interest in Assurance.

He has an MSc in Safety-Critical Systems Engineering from the University of York which has led to a keen interest in the Assurance of Digital Twins, and modern technologies such as MBSA and SACE. Kevin is also CEng and a Fellow of the IET. An active member of the SCSC for many years, Kevin is one of the founders of their Service Assurance Working Group, currently in post as their Chairman.
