It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Bruce Guy, a long-time supporter of SaRS and an Honorary Fellow. Bruce was Company Secretary from 1993 until he retired in 2001 – he continued his committee work for many years afterwards. Bruce was an early member of SaRS. Joining in 1980 and was instrumental in the development of the Society and in the Society’s organisation of the European Safety and Reliability Association (ESREL) 2000 conference in Edinburgh.

He co-edited The ESREL Foresight and Precaution Proceedings and spent many years producing the newsletter for SaRS; Bruce never missed a SaRS Council meeting and argued relentlessly for Engineering Council Professional Affiliate and Licensed status for smaller Professional Engineering Institutes. His calm persistence made a difference in the formation of SaRS and setting up the Society as a professional organisation.

He supported the SaRS office by organising and facilitating industry meetings. Bruce knew the value of networking and also attended meetings at the Engineering Council and visited Affiliate Organisation offices, as well as attending the SaRS Annual conference and sharing his considerable technical expertise both formally in presentation and informally. He was a great believer in education and encouraged early career practitioners to join SaRS and continue their professional development.

Bruce was kind with a great sense of humour, a true gentleman, and will be greatly missed.

Bruce’s family have asked that instead of sending flowers, please make a donation to Alzheimer’s Research UK
